Interns give of their services without pay in pursuit of academic credit through an approved university curriculum or for work experience related to their desired career path. The necessary academic requirements are arranged, in writing, through the appropriate Orphan’s Heart staff member through consultation with the intern’s academic advisor. In the event that the intern is not enrolled in college or university, then a plan will be established between Orphan’s Heart and the intern to earn work and life experience.
Eligible applicants are between the ages of 18-29 and have graduated from high school. Students must be legally eligible for employment in the United States.
International
There are 28 intern positions available in our international locations – 20 in the summer, 4 in the fall and 4 in the spring.

Lakeland
There are 6 intern positions available in Lakeland, Florida – 2 in the summer, 2 in the fall, and 2 in the spring.

Lakeland – Interns in Lakeland will be responsible for finding their own housing, meals, and transportation.

Dominican Republic – Interns stay at the Orphan’s Heart apartment in Azua, Dominican Republic. There are shared bedrooms and kitchen. Beds, sheets, towels, and pillows are provided. Kitchen is stocked with food and snacks. Limited wifi is available.

Guatemala – Interns stay at the Malnutrition Center in San Juan, Guatemala. It is dorm-style housing with shared bathrooms and kitchen. Beds, sheets, towels, and pillows are provided. Kitchen is stocked with food and snacks. Wifi is available.

Latvia – Interns will stay in a rented furnished apartment with the other interns and the Orphan’s Heart leader. Male and Female interns will have separate bedrooms. The kitchen and common spaces will be shared. Group meal preparation and housekeeping will be part of the intern responsibilities.

Uganda – Interns in Uganda stay at the Hines Uganda Ministries guesthouse in Kamonkoli, Uganda. It is located in a gated compound with other ministry buildings (offices, staff housing, etc.) There are basic bedrooms with a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living area. Beds, sheets, towels, pillows and mosquito nets are provided. The kitchen will be stocked with food and snacks, but most meals will be shared in the main orphanage home with the full-time missionary and her children. Wifi is sporadically available.

International internships last 4-6 weeks.

Our domestic internships in Lakeland, FL last 4-12 weeks.

Interns raise their own support. Costs can vary depending on the length of your internship.  The costs listed below are based on a 5 ½ week internship.

Guatemala – The cost of serving in Guatemala is $2,100 plus airfare (approximately an additional $700 roundtrip from Orlando). These costs cover housing, meals, in-country transportation, interpreters, excursions, insurance, and snacks/bottled water.

Dominican Republic – The cost of serving in the Dominican Republic is $2,100 plus airfare (approximately an additional $500 roundtrip from Orlando). These costs cover housing, meals, in-country transportation, interpreters, excursions, insurance, and snacks/bottled water.

Latvia – The cost of serving in Latvia is $1,800 plus airfare (approximately an additional $1,700 roundtrip from Orlando). These costs cover housing, meals, in-country transportation, interpreters, excursions, insurance, and snacks/bottled water.

Uganda – The cost of serving in Uganda is $1,800 plus airfare (approximately an additional $2,200 roundtrip from Orlando). These costs cover housing, meals, in-country transportation, interpreters, excursions, insurance, and snacks/bottled water.

Lakeland – Interns serving in Lakeland must cover the cost of housing and other living expenses. In addition, they must cover the cost of their one-week mission trip to Central America, which is approximately $1,100 plus airfare (approximately an additional $700 roundtrip from Orlando). *The one-week mission trip is optional for Lakeland interns.

All individuals interested in participating in the Orphan’s Heart internship program must complete the following:

  1. Fill out the Internship Application
  2. Send in a minimum of 3 written reference letters of recommendation to Missions@OrphansHeart.org.
  3. Complete a phone interview with the Orphan’s Heart internship committee.
  4. Complete a background screening and drug test. The drug test must have a negative result.
  5. Obtain a Doctor’s note stating you are healthy enough to travel abroad for up to 6 weeks.
  6. Complete the Orphan’s Heart Internship Training.

It is recommended that you send in your internship application asap.  Our intern positions fill up quickly.

A $250 initial payment is due upon acceptance into the internship program. This initial payment is applied to the total cost of the internship program.

  • June 1– Balance due in full

Fall and Spring Session – dates to be determined

Once selected for the internship program:

  • You will be sent a checklist of items to complete.
  • You will be sent our intern responsibilities manual, country manual, and other helpful documents as you prepare to go.
  • We will have a required orientation call for all interns 6-8 weeks prior to departure.  Time and date for this call will be communicated to you by email.
  • You will complete our online internship training program.  All materials and information will be sent to you.  The training will be conducted by the Orphan’s Heart team.
  • An Orphan’s Heart staff person and a staff member from the local ministry partner will both serve as your field supervisors.
  • All interns are expected to be servant-leaders.  Whatever situation arises, interns will have the opportunity to serve and to be helpful, working and encouraging one another with a cheerful heart.  Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.
